At the hotel

After you arrive, you need to check in. You will learn sentences like “I have a reservation under the name…”, “What time is breakfast?”, and “Could I have an extra towel, please?”. You will also practise asking about Wi-Fi, requesting a wake-up call, and reporting a problem in your room. Getting around

Buses, trains, and taxis all use different phrases. You will learn how to buy a ticket (“A single to Manchester, please”), ask which platform your train leaves from, and tell a taxi driver your destination. You will also practise asking for directions on the street: “Excuse me, how do I get to the museum?” and understanding answers like “Go straight, then turn left at the traffic lights.”

You will also learn how tipping works in the UK and how to politely tell a waiter if something is wrong with your order.

If you feel nervous about using English abroad, remember three things. First, most people are patient and happy to help — you do not need perfect grammar. Second, short sentences work best: “One ticket, please” is better than a long, complicated sentence. Third, practise before you go. Listen to the exercises in this course on your phone and repeat the phrases out loud. The more you hear them, the more natural they will feel when you need them.
