What to Say When You Don't Understand the Waiter

ماذا تقول لما ما تفهم النادل

What you will learn

ماذا ستتعلّم

  • How to order food and drinks in a British restaurant
  • Key phrases for the menu, the bill, and tipping
  • Two sentence patterns that work in any restaurant

You sit down in a restaurant. The waiter smiles and says something fast. You catch the word "drink" — or maybe "think" — and now you're nodding and hoping for the best.

تقعد في مطعم والنادل يتكلم بسرعة — هنا تتعلم العبارات اللي تنقذك.

Thirty seconds later, a glass of something arrives that you definitely did not order.

Restaurants are stressful enough in your own language. In English, they come with background noise, unfamiliar food names, and waiters who speak like they're being timed. But here's the thing: you only need a handful of phrases to survive any meal.

The moment you walk in

لحظة ما تدخل

Most restaurants will greet you with one of these questions. They all mean the same thing: "How many people?"

"Table for...?"

طاولة لـ...؟

"How many are you?"

كم واحد أنتم؟

"Have you got a reservation?"

عندكم حجز؟

Your answer is simple — just give the number:

A table for two, please.

طاولة لشخصين من فضلك.

Just one, thanks.

واحد بس، شكرًا.

We don't have a reservation. Is that OK?

ما عندنا حجز. هل هذا يصير؟

When they ask about drinks

لما يسألون عن المشروبات

The waiter will usually take your drink order first. They might say "Can I get you any drinks?" or "What can I get you to drink?" or just "Drinks?"

If you need more time, that's perfectly fine:

Can I have a water, please?

ممكن ماء من فضلك؟

I'll have an orange juice.

بآخذ عصير برتقال.

Could we have a minute to decide?

ممكن تعطينا دقيقة نقرر؟

What soft drinks do you have?

وش المشروبات الغازية عندكم؟

Do you know this one?

The waiter asks 'Still or sparkling?' about your water. What do they mean?

See the answer

'Still' means flat, regular water. 'Sparkling' means fizzy, with bubbles. Just say whichever you prefer.

Survival phrases for the menu

عبارات نجاة للقائمة

British menus can be confusing — even for British people. Words like "jus", "confit", and "fondant" are borrowed from French and half the restaurant has no idea what they mean either. So don't feel bad about asking.

What do you recommend?

وش توصي فيه؟

What's in this dish?

وش في هالطبق؟

Is this spicy?

هل هذا حار؟

Does this have pork in it?

هل فيه لحم خنزير؟

I'm allergic to nuts.

عندي حساسية من المكسرات.

Could I have this without the sauce?

ممكن هذا بدون الصوص؟

Asking "What do you recommend?" is a brilliant shortcut. The waiter does the thinking for you, and you sound confident while doing almost nothing.

Which is correct?

You see something on the menu but you don't know what it is. Which question is more natural?

A: What is the meaning of this word?B: Sorry, what's this dish?
See the answer

B: Sorry, what's this dish? You're in a restaurant, not an English class. 'What's this dish?' is natural and waiters hear it all the time.

Placing your order

لما تطلب أكلك

When you're ready, the waiter will ask "Are you ready to order?" or "What can I get you?" — and this is where two simple sentence patterns do all the heavy lifting:

Pattern 1: "I'll have the..."

"I'll have the chicken, please."

بآخذ الدجاج من فضلك.

Pattern 2: "Could I have...?"

"Could I have the pasta, please?"

ممكن آخذ الباستا من فضلك؟

That's it. Those two patterns will carry you through every restaurant in the English-speaking world. Just swap the food name and add "please."

Things that happen during the meal

أشياء تصير أثناء الأكل

British waiters often check on you mid-meal. They might say "Is everything OK?" or "How's everything?" This isn't a real question — it's a social check. The expected answer is short:

Lovely, thank you.

ممتاز، شكرًا.

Great, thanks.

عظيم، شكرًا.

Could we have some more water, please?

ممكن ماء ثاني من فضلك؟

Excuse me, I think this isn't what I ordered.

لو سمحت، أعتقد هذا مو اللي طلبته.

True or false?

When a British waiter asks 'Is everything OK with your meal?' they expect a detailed, honest review of the food.

FalseIt's a quick social check. 'Lovely, thanks' is the standard reply. Save the food review for TripAdvisor.

Getting the bill

طلب الحساب

In Britain, the waiter will not bring the bill until you ask for it. This is different from some countries where they bring it automatically. When you're ready to leave, catch the waiter's eye and say:

Could we have the bill, please?

ممكن الحساب من فضلك؟

Can I pay by card?

ممكن أدفع بالبطاقة؟

Could we pay separately?

ممكن ندفع كلٍ لحاله؟

Good to know

معلومة مفيدة

In Britain, say "bill" not "check." "Check" is American English. Also, tipping is appreciated but not as expected as in America. Around 10% is normal. Some restaurants add a "service charge" automatically — check the bill before tipping twice.

في بريطانيا، قول "bill" مو "check." والبقشيش حوالي ١٠٪. بعض المطاعم تضيف رسوم خدمة تلقائيًا.

One thing to take away

شيء واحد تاخذه معك

You don't need to understand every word the waiter says. You need two ordering patterns, one question for the menu, and the confidence to say "Sorry, could you say that again?" when you miss something.

Waiters deal with non-native speakers every single day. They will not judge you. They will slow down, smile, and probably recommend the fish.

"I'll have the..." + "please" = you're sorted.

"بآخذ الـ..." + "من فضلك" = خلاص أنت جاهز.
