IELTS: the exam that opens the door

Most universities in the UK, Ireland, and Australia require an IELTS score before they accept you. IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It tests four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each skill is scored from 0 to 9.

معظم الجامعات في المملكة المتحدة وأيرلندا وأستراليا تطلب درجة آيلتس قبل قبولك. آيلتس تعني نظام اختبار اللغة الإنجليزية الدولي. يختبر أربع مهارات: الاستماع والقراءة والكتابة والتحدث. كل مهارة تُقيّم من 0 إلى 9.

A typical undergraduate programme requires an overall score of 6.0 or 6.5. Postgraduate programmes and competitive courses like medicine or law may ask for 7.0 or higher. If your score is too low, the university will not accept you — no matter how good your grades are in other subjects.

البرنامج الجامعي النموذجي يتطلب درجة إجمالية 6.0 أو 6.5. برامج الدراسات العليا والتخصصات التنافسية مثل الطب أو القانون قد تطلب 7.0 أو أعلى. إذا كانت درجتك منخفضة جدًا لن تقبلك الجامعة — بغض النظر عن مدى جودة درجاتك في المواد الأخرى.

The good news is that IELTS is a skill you can practise. It is not about being clever — it is about knowing the format and building your English step by step. Many students go from band 4.5 to 6.5 with consistent daily practice over a few months.

English is not just for the classroom

When you study abroad, you do not only use English in lectures. You use it every day. You need English to open a bank account, register with a doctor, sign a rental contract, and buy a bus pass. You need it at the supermarket, the post office, and the phone shop.

The United Kingdom: The UK is the most popular destination for Arabic-speaking students in Europe. Cities like London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh have large Arab communities, halal food, and mosques nearby. British English is clear and widely understood. Many Saudi, Emirati, and Kuwaiti scholarship students choose the UK because of its strong universities and close cultural ties with the Gulf.

Ireland: Ireland is becoming a popular choice because it is English-speaking, friendly, and slightly more affordable than London. Dublin and Cork have growing student populations. Irish people are known for being welcoming, and the accent, while different from British English, is easy to adjust to after a few weeks.

أيرلندا: أيرلندا أصبحت خيارًا شائعًا لأنها ناطقة بالإنجليزية وودودة وأقل تكلفة قليلًا من لندن. دبلن وكورك فيهما أعداد متزايدة من الطلاب. الأيرلنديون معروفون بالترحيب واللهجة رغم اختلافها عن الإنجليزية البريطانية يسهل التكيف معها بعد أسابيع قليلة.

Australia: Australia attracts students who want excellent universities, warm weather, and the chance to work part-time while studying. Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane have strong Arab communities. Australian English has its own slang, but university teaching is clear and professional.

أستراليا: أستراليا تجذب الطلاب الذين يريدون جامعات ممتازة وطقسًا دافئًا وفرصة العمل بدوام جزئي أثناء الدراسة. مدن مثل سيدني وملبورن وبريزبن فيها جاليات عربية قوية. الإنجليزية الأسترالية لها عامياتها لكن التدريس الجامعي واضح ومهني.

How to prepare your English before you go

كيف تحضّر إنجليزيتك قبل أن تسافر

The best time to start is now — not the month before your flight. Here are four things you can do today:

أفضل وقت للبدء هو الآن — وليس الشهر الذي يسبق رحلتك. إليك أربعة أشياء يمكنك فعلها اليوم:

1. Build your listening skills. University lectures are fast. If you are not used to listening to English for 30 or 60 minutes at a time, start practising now. Listen to short English audio every day and gradually increase the length.

1. ابنِ مهارات الاستماع. المحاضرات الجامعية سريعة. إذا لم تكن معتادًا على الاستماع للإنجليزية لمدة 30 أو 60 دقيقة متواصلة ابدأ بالتدرب الآن. استمع لمقاطع إنجليزية قصيرة كل يوم وزد المدة تدريجيًا.

2. Read in English every day. Start with simple articles like the ones on this website. Then move to longer texts. Reading builds your vocabulary and teaches you how sentences are structured in English — this will help you write better essays.

2. اقرأ بالإنجليزية كل يوم. ابدأ بمقالات بسيطة مثل المقالات على هذا الموقع. ثم انتقل لنصوص أطول. القراءة تبني مفرداتك وتعلّمك كيف تُبنى الجمل بالإنجليزية — وهذا سيساعدك في كتابة مقالات أفضل.

3. Practise IELTS early. Do not leave IELTS preparation until the last minute. Learn the test format, practise with sample questions, and take a mock test. You can take the real test more than once, so start early and improve your score over time.

3. تدرّب على الآيلتس مبكرًا. لا تترك التحضير للآيلتس حتى اللحظة الأخيرة. تعلّم صيغة الاختبار وتدرّب مع أسئلة نموذجية وخض اختبارًا تجريبيًا. يمكنك إجراء الاختبار الحقيقي أكثر من مرة لذا ابدأ مبكرًا وحسّن درجتك بمرور الوقت.

4. Learn everyday English, not just academic English. You will need to talk to landlords, shop assistants, and new friends. Practise phrases for daily life — ordering food, asking for directions, making small talk. This will make your first weeks abroad much easier.

4. تعلّم الإنجليزية اليومية وليس الأكاديمية فقط. ستحتاج التحدث مع أصحاب العقارات ومساعدي المتاجر وأصدقاء جدد. تدرّب على عبارات الحياة اليومية — طلب الطعام والسؤال عن الاتجاهات والحديث القصير. هذا سيجعل أسابيعك الأولى في الخارج أسهل بكثير.
