Talking About Weather in English — Easy Words and Sentences

The weather is one of the most common topics in English conversation. People talk about the weather every day — at work, on the phone, and with neighbours. Learning weather vocabulary gives you something easy and natural to say in any conversation. In this guide, you will learn the most important weather words, how to use them in sentences, and how to ask and answer questions about the weather. You can hear many of these words spoken naturally in our Listening Library.

Weather Words You Need to Know

English has two types of weather words. The first type is nouns — these are the names of weather: sun, rain, wind, snow, cloud. The second type is adjectives — these describe the weather: sunny, rainy, windy, snowy, cloudy. You can see the pattern: we often add -y to the noun to make the adjective.

How to Say What the Weather Is Like

In English, we use "It is..." or "It's..."to describe the weather. We say "It is sunny" — not "The weather is sunny." The word "it"does not mean a thing here. It is just how English works. This is important because in Arabic, you do not need a subject word for weather. In English, you always start with "It is" or "It's."

Temperature Words

You also need words for temperature. The most useful ones are: hot, warm, cool, and cold. "Hot" means very high temperature. "Warm" is comfortable — not too hot, not too cold. "Cool" is a little cold but pleasant. "Cold" means low temperature. You use these the same way: "It is hot today."

Asking About the Weather

The most common question about weather is: "What is the weather like?" You can also ask "What is the weather like today?" or "Is it cold outside?"These are simple yes/no and information questions. You answer with "It is..." followed by a weather adjective.
