How to Talk About Your Family in English

Your familyis one of the first things people ask about when they meet you. "Do you have brothers and sisters?" "How many children do you have?" These are common questions in English. Learning family vocabulary helps you answer them with confidence. In this guide, you will learn the English words for family members, how to describe your family, and how to use simple sentences that sound natural.

Family Members in English

In English, we have clear words for each person in the family. Some words are for close family — the people you live with. Other words are for extended family — the people you see at gatherings and holidays. Let us start with the most important ones.

Close Family

Your close family includes your mother, father, sister, brother, husband, wife, son, and daughter. The word parents means your mother and father together. The word children means your sons and daughters together. We also use baby for a very young child.

Extended Family

Your extended family includes your grandmother and grandfather — we often say grandma and grandpa in everyday speech. You also have an aunt (your parent's sister), an uncle (your parent's brother), and cousins(the children of your aunt or uncle). In English, the word "cousin" is used for both boys and girls.

Describing Your Family

When someone asks about your family, you can use simple sentences. Use "I have..." to say who is in your family. Use "My ... is..."to describe them. For example, "I have two sisters" or "My father is a teacher." You can also say how old someone is: "My son is three years old." Keep your sentences short and clear.
